These zines are the result of a weird rabbit hole I found myself tumbling down while working on my graduate degree in creative writing.

At the time, I needed a subject that wasn’t too personal. I rediscovered an old text which I had picked up at Lancaster Central Market about witchcraft and hexes. This led me to POW-WOWS or the Long Lost Friend by Johann Georg Hohmann (aka The Long Hidden Friend by John George Hohman), a grimoire of local significance within the Pennsylvania Dutch community. I learned about powwowing, hex signs, and the many folk healing remedies of the Amish and Mennonites. I used the himmelsbrief and the historic events surrounding it to create the poems found in these zines.
